Merthyr & Cynon foodbank has started operating in the area of Merthyr Tydfil and Cynon Valley earlier than planned! This is a joint venture run by the Local Gweini (the Welsh meaning "To Serve") and is designed to help individuals and families in crisis through the provision of emergency food supplies. It will replicate the work of Foodbank, a project of the Trussell Trust.

"Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. Trussell Trust foodbanks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis n the UK. Last year our UK foodbank network fed over 60,000 people experiencing food poverty."
Quote taken from the Trussell Trust web site

a complementary foodbank at Aberaman Pentecostal Church will open each Friday.

                            How does foodbank work?

Schools, churches, businesses and individuals donate non-perishable, in-date food to a foodbank. Large collections often take place as part of Harvest Festival celebrations.

Food is also collected at ‘Supermarket Collections’: These are events held at supermarkets where volunteers give shoppers a ‘foodbank shopping list’ and ask them to buy an extra item or two for local people in crisis.

Volunteers sort food to check that it’s in date and pack it into boxes ready to be given to people in need.

Care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, Citizens Advice Bureaux and police identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher.

Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a cup of tea or free hot meal and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem.

                            History of foodbank...

Foodbank was started by the Trussell Trust (http://www.trusselltrust.org)
The Trussell Trust works to empower local communities to combat poverty and exclusion in the UK and Bulgaria. We work with the people that society forgets, providing practical help through sustainable projects and enabling each person to realise that they are valued. Our vision is to build communities where people of all backgrounds are included and have the opportunity to live in dignity with hope for the future.

We are a Christian organisation motivated by Jesus’ teaching on poverty and injustice. We operate according to Christian principles of compassion, honesty, integrity, openness, kindness and care of all people, regardless of backgrounds or beliefs. We believe in turning faith into practical action, living out God’s love for the poor...

‘For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ Matthew 25:35-36.

Whilst we are a Christian organisation, we serve people of all faith groups and beliefs or none. We are passionate about inclusion and being non-judgemental is central to what we do. We believe that everyone has the right to have food on their plate, dignity, skills, a chance to work and hope for the future.
